The first season of archaeological excavation at Vetricella

On 5th September 2016 the excavation in Vetricella (Scarlino) site has started (Fig.1-2). In the first weeks the archaeologists have been focusing on cleaning up the excavation areas opened in previous campaigns through the removal of the arable layer. This allowed to uncover the central portion of the site, highlighting a circular circuit of wall as well as its internal stratigraphy.

The excavation has also expanded on the area outside the east side of the circuit of wall. A wide trench has been carried out to identify the characteristics of the channel which runs around the site, previously identified with the aerial photo.

The continuation of the excavation is showing a more complex archaeological and chronological sequence of the site with respect to that was already assumed, stretching between the 8th and the 11th centuries.

The goal of this campaign is to understand the possible different layouts of the site during periods of the occupation, as well as the nature and the extent of the production activities, so far evidenced by the discovery of production metal slags.
